Uruguay is a country with a strong seed production culture. All the production and sales are over sight and regulated by the INASE The National Seed Institute (INASE).
International recognition for our good practices in seed production has positioned our country as a major supplier of forage crops to the world, complying with the ISTA international rules.
Uruguay has more than 50 accredited and audited laboratories by INASE, which guarantee good control in purity and germination power of each lot.
Seed exports from Uruguay amount to 15,000 tons per year, where the main species are:
- Ryegrass
- Oats
- Fescue – grass
- Lotus
- Red Clover
- White Clover
- Soybean
The forage seed market is estimated to exceed USD 75 million, the main products being oats, ryegrass and lotus.

We have a processing plant at Route 34, Km 41.900 in the village of Villa La Montañesa, Canelones, a few kilometers from Montevideo. It is located in the old La Montañesa plant that gave its name to the village. It is through our strong commitment to quality, tailored attention and innovation that we have been able to work with the main seed companies in our country. For them we produce and process seeds of different crops and varieties with the highest national and international quality standards.
Our goal is to continue expanding the local and foreign markets. Through a high-quality product, we seek to increase yields incorporating new technologies and materials that increase producers’ return.

Germinar also employs more than 50 people, bringing together more than 40 families.
As a consequence of our commitment and dedication, we have been able to diversify the production of a wide variety of forage species, among which the following stand out:

We currently produce:
- 600 hectares of ryegrass
- 300 hectares of foxtail millet
- 200 hectares of oats
- 100 hectares of lotus
- 80 hectares of fescue
- 50 hectares of alfalfa
- 200 hectares of other species
At Germinar we process 100% of our own production and that of the associated producers. We monitor each of the seed producers to ensure that they comply with the quality standards and certifications. We built up experience with each harvest for a better planning, implementation and control processes to be used on the next one.

Technical Advice
We support the producer in the different stages of the production cycle. We Transfer knowledge and help them to implement best practices, with the clear objective of production maximization in a sustainable way. Product Classification According to INASE Standards
In our processing plant we have the appropriate equipment to achieve an international quality seed that meets the requirements of the most demanding markets and customers.
Product Certification According to INASE Standards
We comply with all the protocols established by regulations and by INASE. We are authorized to certify seed producers in the following steps:
- Production
- Harvest
- Processing
- Storage
Our processing plant has storing, seed conditioning facilities and the safety conditions that the product requires for its preservation and commercialization.
Basic Seed Production
We produce basic seeds from public materials or materials licensed by INIA (National Agricultural Research Institute) under the INIA-MSE (Mesa Semillerista del Este) agreement. The objective is to make INIA’s genetics developed in Uruguay available to all producers.
Seed Mixtures
We also make seed mixtures, customized to each producer’s request.
